Cardiff MPs Statement on Cardiff University | Datganiad am Brifysgol Caerdydd
As Cardiff MPs we are extremely proud of the national and international reputation of Cardiff University and the crucial role it plays as an anchor institution and employer in our city.
We are deeply concerned about the University’s proposed job losses and structural changes, impacting on a significant number of courses ranging from nursing to music and modern foreign languages.
We have met with and listened to a wide range of voices over the past few days, including potentially affected employees, student representatives and trade unions.
We communicated these concerns directly to the Vice-Chancellor and university senior management in a lengthy meeting on Friday.
While we recognise the financially challenging situation the university finds itself in – due to a range of factors including issues such as the legacy of past decisions, international trends and wider economic factors – we remain very concerned about the nature and scale of the proposals and their obvious impact on all those affected.
We were very clear in emphasising our view that the University must take every possible step to avoid compulsory redundancies, and that the evidence and data that underpins the proposals should be provided to those affected in order for the consultation to be meaningful and enable alternatives to be proposed and discussed. We also emphasised that more time should be given for the process.
We welcome the candid but constructive engagement the university leadership had with us and are absolutely committed to work with all key stakeholders in the months to come to achieve the best possible outcome for staff, students, the University and the wider community.

Rydym yn bryderus iawn am gynlluniau arfaethedig y Brifysgol a fydd yn arwain at newidiadau strwythurol a cholli swyddi, gan effeithio ar nifer sylweddol o gyrsiau sy’n amrywio o nyrsio i gerddoriaeth ac ieithoedd tramor modern.
Rydym wedi cwrdd ag amrywiaeth eang o bobl dros y dyddiau diwethaf ac wedi gwrando ar eu lleisiau, gan gynnwys gweithwyr y gallai hyn effeithio arnynt, cynrychiolwyr myfyrwyr ac undebau llafur.
Fe wnaethom gyfleu'r pryderon hyn yn uniongyrchol i'r Is-Ganghellor ac uwch-reolwyr y Brifysgol mewn cyfarfod hirfaith ddydd Gwener.
Er ein bod yn cydnabod sefyllfa ariannol heriol y brifysgol – oherwydd amrywiaeth o ffactorau, gan gynnwys materion fel gwaddol penderfyniadau'r gorffennol, tueddiadau rhyngwladol a ffactorau economaidd ehangach – rydym yn dal yn bryderus iawn ynghylch natur a graddfa'r cynigion, a’u heffaith amlwg ar bawb a allai ddioddef yn eu sgil.
Roeddem yn glir iawn wrth bwysleisio ein barn bod yn rhaid i'r Brifysgol gymryd pob cam posibl i osgoi diswyddiadau gorfodol, ac y dylai'r dystiolaeth a'r data sy'n sail i'r cynigion gael eu darparu i'r rhai yr effeithir arnynt er mwyn i'r ymgynghoriad fod yn ystyrlon ac er mwyn gallu cynnig a thrafod opsiynau amgen. Pwysleisiwyd hefyd y dylid caniatáu mwy o amser ar gyfer y broses.
Rydym yn croesawu'r ymgysylltu gonest ond adeiladol a gafodd arweinwyr y Brifysgol gyda ni ac rydym wedi ymrwymo'n llwyr i weithio gyda'r holl randdeiliaid allweddol yn ystod y misoedd nesaf er mwyn sicrhau'r canlyniad gorau posibl i staff, myfyrwyr, y Brifysgol a'r gymuned ehangach.
