Exploring Cardiff Castle | Crwydro Castell Caerdydd
I had a fascinating time exploring our iconic Cardiff Castle with their hugely knowledgeable team. After the recent constituency boundary changes the Castle now comes under my constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth, so it was great to visit as MP.
The Castle has a fascinating history, from its origins as a Roman settlement to its transformation during the Norman Conquest and more recently during the Victorian era under the Marquesses of Bute before it was bequeathed to our city. It even played a vital role during World War II with its air raid shelters which protected thousands of our city’s residents.
And in more recent times the Castle has hosted everything from the NATO summit dinner to our major summer entertainment programme of concerts and Pride Cymru. During my visit it was an honour to be treated to a tour of the gothic revival styled house, led by Chief Curator Erfyl, who gave a brilliant explanation of the building's stunning interiors.
I also had the chance to speak with other members of the Castle team to learn more about the challenges they face as a grade-one listed historical site - and what more we can do to protect its unique heritage - but also the many exciting opportunities ahead.

Cefais i amser gwych yng nghwmni'r tîm gwybodus yng Nghastell eiconig Caerdydd. Yn dilyn y newidiadau diweddar i ffiniau'r etholaeth, mae’r Castell erbyn hyn yn rhan o fy etholaeth i, sef De Caerdydd a Phenarth. Braf iawn oedd ymweld â'r castell fel Aelod Seneddol.
Mae hanes Castell Caerdydd yn ddiddorol dros ben. Caer Rufeinig oedd yma i ddechrau, cyn iddi gael ei thrawsnewid yn ystod concwest y Normaniaid, ac eto’n fwy diweddar yn ystod oes Victoria ac Ardalydd Bute. Ar ôl i’r Ardalydd Bute farw, rhoddwyd y Castell yn rhodd i ddinas Caerdydd. Yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd, gosodwyd llochesi cyrch awyr yn y castell, a buont yn warchodfeydd i filoedd o breswylwyr y ddinas.
Yn fwy diweddar mae pob math o ddigwyddiadau amrywiol wedi eu cynnal yn y castell, gan gynnwys swper uwchgynhadledd NATO, ein rhaglen o gyngherddau haf a Pride Cymru. Braint oedd cael mynd ar daith o'r tŷ sydd wedi ei addurno yn arddull yr adfywiad gothig. Erfyl, y Prif Guradur a arweiniodd y daith, ac roedd yn fwy na pharod i drafod hanes addurniadau hyfryd y castell â mi.
Siaradais i â staff eraill y castell hefyd er mwyn dysgu rhagor am yr heriau sy’n eu hwynebu fel safle hanesyddol rhestredig gradd-un, a’r pethau y gallwn ni eu gwneud i warchod treftadaeth unigryw'r Castell. Braf oedd cael clywed am yr holl gyfleoedd cyffrous sydd ar y gweill ganddyn nhw hefyd.
