Butetown & Cardiff Bay
Butetown and Tiger Bay are famous worldwide for incredible diversity and history. Once the heart of the global coal trade, we are now back on the map for world leading creative, financial and legal industries and top class education thanks to our investment e.g. in Cardiff and Vale College’s new campus.
I’ve worked closely with our local creative industries and cultural hubs such as the Wales Millennium Centre and the BBC Drama Centre, and often meet with their teams to discuss how I can support their work to ensure that Cardiff remains at the centre of the creative industry in the UK. I recently met with Bad Wolf Studios who are producing the amazing new His Dark Materials series for BBC One and inspiring a new generation of young people to work in the creative industries through their education centre.
I have worked with local residents to campaign for action on parking problems, and challenges with some apartment complexes in the Bay, including challenges regarding estate management and fire safety following the Grenfell tragedy.
I worked with local campaigners to fight against ABP’s plans to build high rise flats on Butetown’s Britannia Park. This was a fantastic victory for local campaigners and I was proud to work with them all. I am currently working with those seeking to secure the heritage of the historic Norwegian Church, and have opposed the ill-thought out zip wire plans.
I am working closely with local Councillor Saeed Ebrahim and local police to fight against crime and anti-social behaviour and drug dealing and discarded needles. Working together we have seen more police resources put into the area, CCTV, and better partnership working between different agencies but there is much more to do – and the current clustering of facilities and associated problems, needs a complete rethink.
I have long fought for investment in our local youth services, and regularly work with organisations like our local football and rugby teams, Tiger Bay Boxing Club, and Citizens Cymru who do amazing work in our community. I regularly engage with our local mosques, churches, and other places of worship.
